Acqua di Gio was the second most-upvoted answer in the thread and the one people most often described the same way: strangers ask what it is. It has been that scent since 1996. Bergamot, lime and neroli up top, sea notes and jasmine in the middle, and cedar, white musk and patchouli underneath give it a clean, salty freshness that reads as "showered and put together" rather than "wearing cologne."

It is the value pick because it is the safest bottle on the list. It works in an office where Eros would be too much, it works in July where Aventus would be heavy, and it does not divide a room. It opens with pineapple, bergamot, lemon and pink pepper, moves through birch, jasmine and patchouli, and settles into oakmoss, cedarwood and ambergris. The effect is a smoky, fruity, expensive-smelling signature that people recognize.

Why pay this much: the opening genuinely does not exist at designer prices, and the drydown lasts a full day. This is a 1.7 oz bottle, which sounds small until you remember an EDP this strong is a two-spray fragrance; 50 ml is roughly a year of regular wear. Be clear-eyed about the cons. Aventus is famous for batch variation, so two bottles a year apart can smell subtly different, and Reddit's fragrance forums have argued about it for a decade.
