## Amazon Kindle (16 GB, newest model)

Our rating: 9.0 out of 10.

Best for: Most readers who just want a light, no-fuss e-reader

This is the Kindle most people should buy and then stop thinking about. It is the smallest and lightest of the bunch, easy to slide into a bag or a coat pocket, and the newest model bumped the front light to 25% brighter at its max setting than before, which makes a real difference reading in bed at night.

Page turns feel quick, battery life stretches up to six weeks on a charge, and extras like adjustable front light and dark mode round out a device that genuinely disappears once you start reading. That is a lot of quiet competence for the money.

The tradeoffs are the two features Amazon holds back for the pricier models: there is no waterproofing, so pool or bathtub reading is a risk, and the 6-inch screen is the smallest of the three. For couch-and-commute reading, though, you will rarely find yourself wishing for more.

## Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB, newest model)

Our rating: 9.0 out of 10.

Best for: Travelers and anyone who reads near water

The Paperwhite is the sweet spot for most serious readers and the all-rounder pick of this lineup. The 7-inch screen has a higher contrast ratio and turns pages 25% faster than the previous generation, and the ultra-thin body makes it feel more premium in hand than the price suggests.

A single USB-C charge stretches up to 12 weeks, which is enough that most people simply forget it needs charging until a low-battery notice reminds them. The step up over the base Kindle buys you that bigger display plus real waterproofing, which is exactly why it is our pick for travel, beach days, and reading in the tub without worry.

It is heavier and pricier than the base Kindle, and it is still a black-and-white, stylus-free device, so do not expect color or handwriting here. For the step up over the base model, though, the upgrade is easy to justify.
