## Apple AirPods Pro 3

Our rating: 9.0 out of 10.

Best for: iPhone owners, where the operating system does half of what these earbuds are sold on.

The AirPods Pro 3 are the right answer on an iPhone and a mediocre one anywhere else, and it is worth being precise about why. The cancellation, the sound and the fit are the earbuds. Live Translation, the hearing-aid features, Find My precision location, automatic device switching and one-tap pairing are all implemented in Apple's operating system, so on Android the same hardware is a competent pair of Bluetooth earbuds and nothing more.

On the hardware side, Apple redesigned the acoustic architecture and claims up to twice the noise removed compared with the AirPods Pro 2. That is Apple's own figure and not an independent measurement, but the direction is consistent with what owners report in loud rooms and on transit. Heart-rate sensing across a wide range of workout types is new and works without a watch. The foam-infused tips seal better than the previous silicone-only design for most ears.

The limits are the usual Apple ones. There is no aptX or LDAC, so on Android you are on AAC or SBC, which is a real ceiling on sound quality. The battery is not user-serviceable and degrades over a couple of years of daily charging, at which point the pair is effectively consumable. And repairs are a replacement rather than a repair.

## CMF Buds 2a

Our rating: 7.7 out of 10.

Best for: A gym bag or a second pair, where losing them should not be a financial event.

The Buds 2a are the pair to own alongside something better. A 12.4mm bio-fiber driver tuned by Dirac gives them warm mids and more low-end weight than the price suggests, which is the part that most cheap earbuds get wrong by chasing treble sparkle instead.

The hybrid ANC is the headline. It takes the drone out of a bus, a train or an open office, which is genuinely more than the price implies. Four microphones handle calls, and IP54 covers sweat and dust rather than just splashes, so they can live in a gym bag without being babied.

What you give up is depth and voice. The cancellation flattens the low-frequency drone and leaves higher-frequency noise (voices nearby, keyboard clatter, an announcement) largely intact, which is exactly where the Bose pulls away. Call clarity in wind or on a busy street is workable rather than good. The case is plastic and the hinge is the part that eventually goes. And CMF's app is where the EQ and ANC modes live, so the buds are noticeably less capable if you never install it.
