## Asmodee Splendor

Our rating: 8.1 out of 10.

Best for: Adults who want a weeknight strategy game that sets up in two minutes and ends in thirty.

Splendor is the shortest game that still feels like strategy. Marc André designed it for Space Cowboys in 2014, and it was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres that year. On a turn you do one of three things: take gem tokens, reserve a card, or buy a development card. Each card you buy acts as a permanent gem discount, so early purchases make later ones cheaper, and the first player to 15 prestige points triggers the end.

That compounding discount is what makes Splendor an engine-builder rather than a set collector. The middle of the game is a race to decide which color to specialize in while watching what everyone else is building. Nobles visit the first player to meet their gem requirements, which adds a shared target to fight over.

The limits are theme and interaction. The Renaissance gem-trading story is thin, and some tables call the game dry. Direct interaction comes only from reserving or buying a card someone else wanted. Four players can lock up the gem supply and slow everyone down, while two players get a cleaner race. The poker-chip tokens are heavy and pleasant to handle.

## Stronghold Games Terraforming Mars

Our rating: 9.0 out of 10.

Best for: Groups of 2 to 4 adults, or solo players, who want a deep engine-builder for a two-hour game night.

Terraforming Mars is the strategy game that most hobby players would keep if they could keep one. Jacob Fryxelius designed it for FryxGames in 2016, and Stronghold Games publishes it in the US. Each player runs a corporation helping make Mars habitable: raising temperature, adding oxygen and placing oceans. Those three shared tracks end the game, but points go to whoever profited most along the way.

The engine is the deck. The box holds 208 project cards and 17 corporations, and a game deals you a handful of each from which you keep what fits. Cards raise your production, react to what other players do, or chain into combinations that pay off over many generations. Because the card pool is so large, the tenth game rarely resembles the first.

The drawbacks are real. The listed 120 minutes runs longer with new players or five at the table, and a solo game takes about as long. Components are functional rather than pretty: thin player boards let production cubes slide when bumped, which many owners fix with third-party overlays. Card text is dense, so the first game can feel like reading. The first few generations build little.
