## CATAN Board Game

Our rating: 7.9 out of 10.

Best for: Groups of exactly three or four talkative adults and teens who enjoy bargaining.

CATAN is the game that pulled modern board games into the mainstream, and three decades later it is still the strongest trading game a new group can buy. Klaus Teuber designed it in 1995, and it won the Spiel des Jahres that year. Players build settlements and roads on an island of 19 terrain hexes, collect brick, lumber, wool, grain and ore when the dice hit their numbers, and race to 10 victory points.

The heart of the game is trading. You will almost never roll exactly what you need, so every turn becomes a negotiation, and the table talk is what new players remember. The board is laid out differently each time, which keeps the opening placement interesting.

CATAN has real weaknesses as a first game. The box seats only 3 or 4; five and six need a separate extension. Dice luck can starve a player for several turns with nothing to do. The robber invites a group to gang up on the leader, and a game can stretch past 90 minutes once negotiations drag. Those quirks are why it sits second here, behind a game that also plays at two.

## Z-Man Games Carcassonne

Our rating: 8.5 out of 10.

Best for: Couples and families with kids 7 and up buying their first modern board game.

Carcassonne is the board game most hobby players name when asked what to buy a newcomer, and the reason is the turn. You draw one square tile, add it to the shared map so the edges match, and may place one of your wooden meeples on a road, city, monastery or field on that tile. Finished features score. That is nearly the whole rulebook, and a first-time player is taking real turns within five minutes.

Klaus-Jürgen Wrede designed it in 2000, and it won the Spiel des Jahres in 2001. The current Z-Man edition includes The River and The Abbot mini-expansions, so the base box already has some variety. Because the map is built from 72 shuffled land tiles, no two games look alike, and quiet players can focus on their own corner.

The weak points are well known. Farmer scoring at the end confuses almost every new group, and many tables leave farmers out for the first few games. With five players you wait longer between turns and have less control over what you draw. Two-player games turn sharply competitive, as each tile becomes a chance to block the other person's city.
