It opens with pineapple, bergamot, lemon and pink pepper, moves through birch, jasmine and patchouli, and settles into oakmoss, cedarwood and ambergris. The effect is a smoky, fruity, expensive-smelling signature that people recognize.

Why pay this much: the opening genuinely does not exist at designer prices, and the drydown lasts a full day. This is a 1.7 oz bottle, which sounds small until you remember an EDP this strong is a two-spray fragrance; 50 ml is roughly a year of regular wear.
