## Nikon Aculon T02 10x21 (black)

Our rating: 7.3 out of 10.

Best for: Concert-goers, stadium fans and city travelers who want a 195 g pocket pair for dry days.

The Aculon T02 is the pocket binocular in this guide. The black version in our catalog is Nikon model 16735, which is the 10x21. Nikon sells the 8x21 only in colors such as red, blue and white, so check the listing before you buy. At 87 x 104 x 34 mm and 195 g, it slips into a jacket pocket in a way the Trailblazer does not.

Nikon's spec sheet gives the 10x21 a 5.0 degree real field of view, which is 262 feet at 1,000 yards, an 8.3 mm eye relief and a 2.1 mm exit pupil. In plain terms, the view is narrow, the image is dim once light fades, and glasses wearers may struggle to see the full field. That suits a lit stage, a stadium or a daytime city view, and it is a weak tool for dawn birding or tracking a moving animal. The roof prisms and multilayer coatings are what you expect from Nikon at this size.

Nikon publishes no waterproof rating for the T02, so keep it out of rain. Price is the other catch: $76.95 is the top of its tracked range, which has dipped to $46.95.

## Nikon Trailblazer 8x25 ATB

Our rating: 8.3 out of 10.

Best for: Hikers, backyard birders and travelers who want one small, weatherproof pair that lives in a daypack.

The Trailblazer 8x25 ATB is the binocular most adults reading this should buy. It is still compact at 9.9 oz, but it fixes the main weaknesses of a pocket pair. The body is nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed, so rain, humidity and a cold morning that fogs other optics are not a problem, and the rubber armor gives a sure grip with wet hands.

The optics favor ease of use over reach. At 8x with a 25 mm objective, the Trailblazer shows an 8.2 degree real field, 429 feet at 1,000 yards. That is far wider than the 262 feet of the Aculon 10x21, which makes finding a bird or following a runner much easier. The 3.1 mm exit pupil keeps the image brighter as light drops. Close focus is about 8.2 feet, and the BaK-4 roof prisms keep the body straight and slim.

The limits are those of any 25 mm binocular. Dawn, dusk and stargazing need bigger objectives, around 42 mm. The 10 mm eye relief is short for many glasses wearers even with the turn-and-slide eyecups. Some owners report a pair going out of alignment, so check yours on arrival.
