Bellaa 23332 Capiz Sea Glass Shell Wind Chime (27 inch) vs Corinthian Bells 30 Inch Wind Chime (T206GN, Green)

The Bellaa capiz chime belongs in this guide as a decoration, and it should be bought as one. Thin capiz shell discs hang in strands from a bamboo top with fishing net trim, 27 inches long and about 6 inches across. When the wind moves it, the discs shimmer and tap against each other. That is the sound: a soft, dry clatter, closer to beads than to bells. There are no tubes, no stated key and nothing to tune.

That makes it a different product from the two Corinthian Bells sets, and in some places a better one. Under a covered porch, in a sunroom or inside a window, a quiet chime is what you want, and capiz throws colored light in a way aluminum never will. The listing pitches it as a sympathy and memorial gift, and at this price it works as one.

The weak spot is weather. Bellaa states no UV treatment for the cord and no coating on the shell, and natural shell and bamboo are the materials most likely to fade, crack or tangle in a storm. Hang it somewhere sheltered and take it in for winter. The retailer rating sits at 4.2 from 2,384 reviews, the lowest of the three.

The Corinthian Bells 30 Inch is the chime that answers the question most buyers are really asking: something that sounds good, survives outdoors and does not take over the yard. Wind River makes it in Virginia from six aluminum alloy tubes, 7/8 inch in diameter, hand-tuned to a pentatonic set of notes in the key of A. Because the notes are chosen to fit together, any order the striker hits them in still sounds like a chord.

Each tube hangs from a braided nylon cord pinned at its center, which lets it keep ringing as it spins rather than going dead against its own cord. The longest tube is 15 inches, so the pitch sits in a bright, middle register: clear across a deck, not loud enough to carry over a fence in a light breeze. Total weight is 3 pounds, which a standard hook under an eave handles easily.

The tradeoffs are price and depth. At $124 it costs well over three times the Bellaa, and anyone after a low, slow tone will find the 30-inch bright. The tubes are powder coated, so the green finish can chip if the chime bangs against a wall. Retailer rating: 4.9 from 1,649 reviews.
