Our take on each
Grandpa Beck's Games Skull King
Best for: Groups of four to eight teens and adults who want one card game that works at every gathering.
Skull King is a trick-taking game, the family that includes Spades and Hearts, with one rule that changes how every hand feels: before each round, all players bid exactly how many tricks they will win. Hit the bid and you score. Miss it in either direction and you lose points. A bid of zero pays well when it holds, so a terrible hand can still be a winning one.
Brent Beck and Jeffrey Beck built the special cards around that bid. Pirates beat the numbered suits, the Skull King beats pirates, and a mermaid captures the Skull King. Escape cards let you lose a trick on purpose. Hands grow from one card in the first round to ten in the last, so early rounds teach the rules and late rounds test them.
Range is why Skull King holds the value slot. Few card games seat eight without dragging, and Skull King does at $19.99. The trade is luck: a round of one or two cards is close to a coin flip, and players who want pure skill will find the swings annoying. Scoring needs a pad and running arithmetic, and the bonus rules need a second read.
Rio Grande Games Dominion 2nd Edition
Best for: A regular group of 2 to 4 that wants a strategy game made of cards, with room to grow through expansions.
Dominion is the game that created deckbuilding, and the second edition is still the cleanest way into the genre. Donald X. Vaccarino's design starts every player with the same small deck of copper coins and estates. Each turn you play cards, buy one new card from a shared market, and shuffle it into your deck later. Over about 30 minutes, those small purchases turn a weak deck into an engine.
The market is the replay value. A game uses 10 of the 26 kingdom card types in the box, so the strategies on offer change at every setup. The second edition, released in 2016, swapped six first-edition kingdom cards for seven new ones and rewrote the rulebook. Points come from victory cards, and buying them clogs your deck, which is the central tension of every game.
The cost is interaction. Most turns go into improving your own deck, and only some kingdom cards attack or affect other players, so a passive card set can feel like four people playing solitaire. Sorting 500 cards for setup and teardown takes real time without an organizer. The expansion line adds depth, and it also adds cost quickly.
