Our take on each
Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L
Best for: Photographers and gear-heavy travelers who want one weatherproof pack for camera kit, laptop and daily carry.
The Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L is the most refined bag here, and it is aimed at a specific traveler: someone carrying a camera, lenses and a laptop who wants to reach any of it without taking the bag off. The top closes with Peak Design's MagLatch, a magnetic latch that works one-handed, and two weatherproof side zips open the main compartment from either side.
Inside, FlexFold dividers split the space for camera gear or fold flat for clothes. Separate sleeves take a 15-inch laptop or a 16-inch MacBook Pro, plus a tablet. The shell is 400D recycled nylon with a DWR finish, and the main compartment expands, so the bag runs from about 22 liters slim to 30 liters full. A luggage pass-through lets it ride on a rolling suitcase handle.
The costs are weight and focus. The listing puts it at 2.06 kg, heavier than the 40-liter tomtoc while holding less. Its layout serves a camera kit better than a week of clothes, so as a pure clothing bag it is the wrong buy. At $299.95 it costs nearly four times the tomtoc.
tomtoc Navigator-T66 Travel Backpack 40L
Best for: Carry-on-only travelers packing for 3 to 5 days who want a backpack that packs like a suitcase.
The tomtoc Navigator-T66 is the bag on this list built for one job, which is carrying everything for a short trip in the overhead bin. At 40 liters and 20.47 x 12.99 x 9 inches, it fills the common US carry-on size of 22 x 14 x 9 without going over, so you get the most packing space a legal carry-on allows.
The main compartment unzips all the way around like a suitcase, so packing cubes lie flat and you can see everything at once. A separate laptop section takes machines up to 17 inches and opens 90 to 180 degrees, so it can lie flat in a security tray. A front quick-access pocket reaches into the main compartment in flight. tomtoc uses YKK zippers and recycled polyester, and the bag weighs about 1.2 kg empty.
The trade-offs come with the size. Fully packed, 40 liters is heavy on the shoulders, and the padded straps and chest buckle help less than a real hip belt would. It is too big to use as a day bag at your destination. Some European budget carriers set smaller cabin limits than US airlines.
