Editor's note

A tiny pocket stone for the crystal-curious. I would tuck it into a card for someone who keeps a little altar going.

Why we picked it

Best for: A stocking stuffer, a desk object or a first purple stone for a child who collects rocks.

A hand-carved amethyst pyramid about 1 inch tall and 9 grams, for $8.99.

What we like

+ Real carved amethyst for under nine dollars
+ Quartz hardness of 7 shrugs off pocket carry and small drops
+ Small enough for a desk, a gift bag or a child's rock box
+ Simple shape that needs no stand or explanation

Watch outs

- At about 1 inch and 9 grams it has little shelf presence
- Color is often pale and patchy at this price
- Can fade if left in strong direct sunlight for long periods
- Lowest retailer rating of the three at 4.2
