Our take on each
Crucial X10 Pro 1TB
Best for: Windows PC owners with a 20 Gbps USB-C port who edit photos or video straight off an external drive.
The Crucial X10 Pro is the value pick because it delivers the fastest class of USB drive for close to budget money. Crucial rates it for 2,100 MB/s reads and 2,000 MB/s writes over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and the write figure matters as much as the read. Offloading a camera card or a folder of 4K footage is a write job, and that is where cheap drives fall off.
The catch is the port. Those speeds need a 20 Gbps USB-C port, which is common on recent Windows desktops and some laptops but absent on every Mac, because Apple never adopted Gen 2x2. On a Mac or a 10 Gbps PC port the X10 Pro runs at roughly 1,000 MB/s, still fine but no faster than a T7.
The body is small at 65 x 50 x 10 mm and about 42 g. It carries an IP55 dust and water rating, a 2 meter drop rating, password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption, an activity light and a lanyard loop. The retailer rating of 4.0 across 4,443 reviews is the weakest of the three, so register the warranty early.
Samsung T9 Portable SSD 2TB
Best for: Video creators and iPhone Pro shooters who need 2TB on one drive and want full speed on a long transfer, not just the first minute.
The Samsung T9 2TB is the premium pick for capacity and for long jobs. Samsung rates it for 2,000 MB/s reads and 1,950 MB/s writes over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and its pitch is that it holds those speeds through sustained work, with a thermal design meant to stop the drive throttling as it heats up. That shows during a 300 GB project copy, not a short benchmark.
Doubling to 2TB is the other reason it sits on top. A day of 4K footage or a full photo library fits on one drive, and Samsung's Magician software adds firmware updates, drive health checks and password encryption on top of 256-bit AES hardware encryption. The body is 88 x 60 x 14 mm and 122 g with a rubber-wrapped shell rated for 3 meter drops.
The price is the problem in 2026. Samsung launched the 2TB model at $239.99 in 2023, and we have tracked it between $409.99 and $467 since late August as flash prices climbed. Like the Crucial, it only reaches full speed on a 20 Gbps port, so on a Mac it runs near 1,000 MB/s.
