Our take on each
Samsung T9 Portable SSD 2TB
Best for: Video creators and iPhone Pro shooters who need 2TB on one drive and want full speed on a long transfer, not just the first minute.
The Samsung T9 2TB is the premium pick for capacity and for long jobs. Samsung rates it for 2,000 MB/s reads and 1,950 MB/s writes over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and its pitch is that it holds those speeds through sustained work, with a thermal design meant to stop the drive throttling as it heats up. That shows during a 300 GB project copy, not a short benchmark.
Doubling to 2TB is the other reason it sits on top. A day of 4K footage or a full photo library fits on one drive, and Samsung's Magician software adds firmware updates, drive health checks and password encryption on top of 256-bit AES hardware encryption. The body is 88 x 60 x 14 mm and 122 g with a rubber-wrapped shell rated for 3 meter drops.
The price is the problem in 2026. Samsung launched the 2TB model at $239.99 in 2023, and we have tracked it between $409.99 and $467 since late August as flash prices climbed. Like the Crucial, it only reaches full speed on a 20 Gbps port, so on a Mac it runs near 1,000 MB/s.
SanDisk Portable SSD 1TB
Best for: PS5, Xbox and laptop owners who want a pocket drive for game libraries and backups and will never notice speeds above 800 MB/s.
The SanDisk Portable SSD is the drive to buy when the job is storage rather than speed. It is a plain 1TB USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive rated for up to 800 MB/s reads, and that ceiling sits close to what a 10 Gbps port can deliver. On a Mac, a PS5 or an Xbox Series X, faster drives in this guide lose most of their lead because those hosts top out at 10 Gbps or below.
That makes it a strong console drive. A PS5 can play PS4 games straight from USB storage and park PS5 games there between sessions, and an Xbox Series X|S can run older-generation titles from it. Neither console benefits from the 2,000 MB/s class.
The compromises are written into the spec sheet. SanDisk publishes a read figure but no write figure, so large copies onto the drive run slower than the box suggests. There is no hardware encryption, no dust or water rating, and the warranty is 3 years against 5 on the other two picks. The 2 meter drop rating and the rubber hook loop suit a bag strap. For backups and game storage it is enough.
