KZ ZS10 Pro vs Truthear x Crinacle Zero:RED

The ZS10 Pro got a generation of listeners into this hobby, and the hardware still holds up: four balanced armatures and one dynamic driver per side, a stainless steel faceplate on a resin shell, and a detachable 0.75mm 2-pin cable that turns a frayed lead into a cheap part.

What it does is a strong V shape. Bass has weight and slam, the lower midrange steps back, and the balanced armatures push a lot of energy into the upper treble, so cymbals and strings sparkle and busy mixes sound dramatic. On the right material it is genuinely exciting, and it is easy to drive from any phone dongle.

What it does not do is neutrality, and that is why reviewers no longer name it the budget default. The treble peak tips into sibilance on bright vocals and at higher volumes, the recessed lower mids leave voices sitting behind the instruments, and single-dynamic sets tuned to a published target now beat it on evenness at similar money. The stock cable is stiff and the supplied tips are mediocre; most owners replace both, which is a real added cost. Buy it because you want this sound, not because it is the safe choice.

The Zero:RED is the set to buy, and the reason is the tuning process rather than the parts list. Crinacle publishes measurements for a living, and this is tuned toward a documented target instead of toward whatever sells on a demo table, so the response is even where it matters and the deviations are deliberate.

The hardware is a 10mm plus 7.8mm dual dynamic arrangement with LCP diaphragms, behind a 0.78mm 2-pin detachable cable. In practice that means vocals sit forward and clear, the treble carries detail without the peak that makes the ZS10 Pro sting, and there is a sub-bass shelf that adds weight underneath rather than bloating the midbass. It is easy to drive and does not need an amp.

The fit is the real caveat. The nozzle is wider than average, so third-party tips are a fight to seat and smaller ear canals find it uncomfortable after an hour. The shells are unremarkable plastic. And if you are coming from a V-shaped hybrid the bass will read as restrained for the first week, because it is: this is a set that gets the tone right rather than one that impresses immediately.
