Why we picked it
Best for: Mixing at a desk, on an interface headphone output rather than a dedicated amp.
An open-back mixing reference at 48 ohms, with a detachable cable. It is the DT 990 Pro with both of its long-standing complaints fixed.
What we like
- + 48 ohms means an interface headphone output drives it properly, removing an amp from the purchase
- + Locking mini-XLR cable connector with two leads supplied, so cable failure is a swap
- + Open back makes reverb tails and stereo placement far easier to judge than any closed cup here
- + Pads, headband and cables are all individually stocked beyerdynamic spares
Watch outs
- - Leaks freely in both directions, so it cannot be used near a live microphone or in a shared room
- - Velour pads compress over time, which shifts the seal and quietly changes the bass you are mixing against
- - Retains a presence-region lift, so bright material still needs a second reference before you commit
- - Plastic frame with a metal headband core feels plainer than the price suggests
